Density Experiment

Today we conducted our 3rd experiment with our free OU course - Understanding Experiments. We were freezing different liquids and then seeing if the frozen cube would float or sink on it's liquid version. In other words did the liquid become more or less dense as a solid.

Our results showed that olive oil, honey and golden syrup all sank whilst anything containing lots of water like juice, washing up liquid and milk all floated. This is due to the strange properties of water - it becomes less dense as it freezes unlike other liquids which become more dense.
