Stone Henge and Old Sarum

Today we went to Stone Henge, the stone-age circle near Salisbury. For a pile of old stones it was rather awesome! You can actually get quite close to the stone circle which once may have been an ancient place of worship and also a huge calendar.

English Heritage offer free visits to their properties for home educators, you just need to book in advance.

As we were leaving the site we saw a sign suggesting we visit Old Sarum which was only 8 miles away. Why not?

This iron age hill fort was the location for the first Salisbury cathedral. There were great views across the Wiltshire countryside to the present day cathedral.
