Family Trees

This week in science we are learning about inherited traits. We had a go at making our simple family tree.

This is R's family tree. Granddad is crying because Nanny has smacked his bum, the other Granddad is crying because Nana has told him off. Make your own interpretations!

Enkidu Monsters

This week in history we heard the Assyrian story about a monster called Enkidu who was half man, half animal. The story doesn't say what kind of beast the creature was. The children did these quick collages to show how they thought he looked. I had fun too.

Orchestra

Photo from FGYO website

Today we had a lovely time at Campbelltown Arts Centre  at the Fishers Ghost Youth Orchestra's concert for children. The children got to learn about all the instruments of the orchestra, find out what a conductor does and even have a go on the percussion section. We were treated to several tunes and an interpretation of the 3 little pigs. Great fun and free!

Bird Feeders

Today we made bird feeders with a coconut, vegetable shortening and bird seed mix.

The most challenging part was cutting open the coconut! Below you can see how an engineer does it.

Once we finally got the coconut into 2 halves we scooped out the flesh (and ate some of it) and then fixed a hanging string inside. Next the children mixed the bird seed with melted vegetable shortening and then scooped the mixture into the coconut shells.

We left the filled coconuts in the fridge until they were set and then hung them up outside for the birds.

We have placed the coconuts on the fence right next to our neighbours bird table so hopefully the birds will find them tomorrow.

Black And White Photography

Today the children tried out black and white photography with Dad. Here are some of their pictures.

One Point Perspective Rivers

We have been looking at aquatic environments this week. I saw this perspective drawing on smART class so we decided to have a go at drawing a river in perspective.

Image from smART

To warm up we had a go with watercolours and we tried working on dry and damp paper to see how it changed the effects we could make.

Next the children worked on a guided drawing in pencil to produce their perspective pictures. We talked about how things look smaller when they are further away.

Then the children painted their pictures with watercolour and outlined them with black markers.
