Operation Art 2012

Today we went to see the exhibition of children's art works; Operation Art at Newington Armoury. Below are just a few of our many favourites.

Of course we had plenty of time for the new playground and water play area at the nearby Blaxland Riverside park.

Maritime Museum

This week we are doing a project on oceans. We started off our study with a trip to the Australian National Maritime Museum.  The best parts of the museum are the ships and submarine moored outside. The volunteer guides told us lots of interesting facts as we climbed and crouched through the vessels. Here are some pictures from the day.

Abstract Figures

Today we looked the the picture "First Class Marksman" by Sidney Nolan.

We discussed how we knew the black image was a person even though it's painted in an abstract way. The children identified things that can identify an abstract shape as a person - body, head, eyes, arms, legs etc. They then had a go at making their own person using abstract shapes.

List Poems

Today the children had a go at writing a list poem  First we did one together about fruit. The children brainstormed and came up with as many fruits as possible. Next we listed 2 fruits and an adjective to describe them, on each line. We made lines 2 and 4 rhyme. We used Rhyme Zone to help us with this.

Here's our group poem.

Fruit

Yellow banana, juicy nashi pear,
Orange orange, black berry.
Sweet, red currant, water melon,
Soft mango, red cherry.

Sour rhubarb, purple plum,
Gooseberry, green grape.
Crunchy apple, brown, spotted pear,
Yummy strawberry; heart shape.

Next the children had a go at doing their own poem. L choose animals and R choose transport.

Abstracts

Today the children experimented freely with shapes to produce an abstract collage. We also used French curves to make some strange curved shapes. I encouraged the children to overlap some pieces and try to connect shapes together with other shapes. Tomorrow we will use the same method to make an abstract person.

Roman Lunch

We have just begun studying the Romans. The children made this Roman lunch today featuring honey omelette, fruits and vegetables, olives and cecina (a kind of soft biscuit made from chickpeas). It was all delicious.
