Light And Shadows Project

This week we are working on a science project on light and shadows.

First we gathered books from the library and our own collection.

We have been doing lots of hands on experiments including, mixing coloured lights, making shadows, reflecting light around the room, investigating day and night and phases of the moon. We got many of our experiments from the 365 experiments book.

Deer and cockatoo shadows:

The children used shadows to draw a profile silhouette of each other.

We'll be doing some more experiments this week and hopefully it will stop raining and we can make some sundials.

Paper Lanterns

After visiting the Chinese New Year Lantern Carnival we decided to try making our own lanterns. We made frames from bamboo garden canes held together with lots of sticky-tape.

We then covered the frames with strips of coloured tissue paper and lots and lots of watered down PVA glue.

We used fake tea-lights with LEDs inside to light them up.

Chinese New Year Lantern Carnival

This year there was a new event for Chinese New Year in Darling Harbour - The Lantern Carnival.

We got there early so we could see some of the other events like Dragon Dances by China's top troop, puppets shows and live music.

Once darkness fell the lanterns looked spectacular.

We then went around to the Rocks where the Lanterns of the Terracotta Warriors were on display.

Keep a look out for future posts where we will be making our own lantern sculptures.

Pop Art Portraits

The children made these pop art style portraits using PhotoShop. You can view the excellent tutorial we used from Blue Lightening TV.
